You never knew you would spend so much time at the dining room table!
Like millions of other people, you may find yourself suddenly having to home school your children or to supervise teens in their online learning journey. Or you may be using this time during lockdown to work on a new skill or craft. Either way, the chances are your dining table is suddenly in demand by multiple members of your household – so it is important to protect it.
Lockdown Adventures at the Dining Room Table
It may seem like a small thing, but having to deal with scratches, ring marks, marker pens, or stains on your table is a headache that can be avoided with a decent tablecloth. Here are some of the ways a tablecloth can protect your dining table from the wear and tear of lockdown:
Working from Home
If you haven’t got an office and you’re working from home, chances are you’re heading to the dining table for a surface to lean on. Whilst you might think this is a mess-free activity, it isn’t: laptops can get very hot when charging, and if you’ve upped your tea consumption now you’re working from home, you may not always remember to use a coaster (you might find this is the case with teenagers using the table too). This is why it’s important to use a tablecloth, even if you’re not eating or crafting – there are some beautiful PVC or oilcloth options out there to choose from.
Home Schooling
You might be good at avoiding pen marks on the furniture, but kids are not quite as sensible. A wipe-clean tablecloth can stop your table from being ruined by marker pens, felt tips, or paints – all of which will make an appearance during home schooling. Save yourself the headache of trying to scrub biro marks from your table or the time spent peeling stickers from your furniture and opt for a tablecloth instead.
Arts and Crafts
If you’ve decided now is the time to bring out the glue gun, you’re not alone – many people are picking up new skills or deciding to improve on old ones. Crafting is a great way to pass the time, but it tends to be messy: from collage to decoupage to painting to sewing, your table could be in for a battering unless you protect it properly. A good quality tablecloth should be able to be used again and again – oilcloth is particularly good for this, as it gives you a wipe-clean surface to work with.
Home Made Meals
Of course, at the end of the day, you’ll have to clear away all the work, craft clutter, and kids’ schoolwork to make room for your evening meal. A wipe-clean tablecloth can be cleaned with hot soapy water and left to dry overnight, which is really useful for a fresh start in the morning. Switching up to a different tablecloth for your dinner can help transition into the evening, transforming your space (and therefore your mindset) ever so slightly.
